Wilde Volk explores the masked traditions of eastern and northern Europe through photography, art, film, sculpture and sound.
For over eight years, I, Suzanne Rolfe, and my friends have explored numerous Wilde Volk festivals across Europe. Our adventures have taken us to the dark and devilish Krampus parades in Germany, the cumbrous horned processions of the Perchten in Austria and the colourful Kukeri masquerades of Bulgaria, plus many more!
Through personal photos and film, we are thrilled to share the strangeness and excitement of these esoteric and bizarre rituals. However, to create an immersive experience, we have also invited international and local artists to respond to our experiences.
We are incredibly excited to showcase the photos from internationally renowned photographer Ivo Danchev, plus soundscapes from Romanian sound designer Gigi Catrina.
Closer to home, we are supersonically delighted to invite the experimental electronic music collective Spirit of Gravity, who will be using field recordings that we collected at events to create new Wilde Volk soundscapes.
To add to the Wilde Volk magic, we are honoured to be exhibiting Krampus-inspired creations from stained-glass artists Jeff Kazimir and Penny Toomey, willow sculptor Woody Fox and mask maker Simon Chandler. Additionally, we will be showing magical bear art by felt artist Lou Hart and unusual bear charms by Jo Goddard. Finally, automaton creator Helen D’Arcy will be displaying a Kukeri doll extraordinaire!
How many strange and horned creatures can one get in a Windmill? Who knows!
Please save the date, and see you all there in July! Free ‒ no need to book, just pitch up!
We would like to sincerely thank Art Rovers (AKA Jo Goddard) and Rottingdean Heritage for giving us the opportunity to curate this exhibition.
